During his presentation, Braveheart will discuss his 25-year career photographing America’s national lands, including Zion National Park. His current residency at Zion began February 4 and continues through March 3.  In 2013, he was artist-in-residence at Mesa Verde National Park and Smoky Mountain National Park.

Honoring Nature Through Photography

As a photographer and Iroquois/Tuscarora Native American, Braveheart says his objective is to honor and share the beauty of the land and its creatures.

As a fine art photographer, my wish always, is to capture the inner spirit and beauty of nature; the Earth and its animals, and share that beauty with others through photography.”–Rick Braveheart

Growing up in Western New York State and Southern Ontario Canada, Braveheart’s first experience with a camera was at 16. He borrowed his father’s 35mm Kodak, went to a nearby park, and spent four hours shooting three rolls of film. That’s what got him hooked for life on photography.

Braveheart’s photos are on display in several prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian National Museum and Museum of Northern Arizona. His photography studios are located in Ohio and Florida. He lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife Barbara. More information on his photography is available here.

National Park Artist-in-Residence Program

Mr. Braveheart’s participation in the Artist-in-Residence program at Zion National Park honors and continues a long tradition of artists using their work to facilitate a national conversation on the value of nature and preservation. This tradition began in the early 19th century with Hudson River School painters and Transcendentalist writers like Thomas Cole and Henry David Thoreau. The work of some of these artists led to preservation legislation that created Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion National Parks.
