A four-day hearing in Phoenix is underway examining the remedies that could be ordered as a result of a jury’s findings in a civil rights case seven months ago.

The case alleged that non believers in the twin polygamous towns of Hildale, Utah and Colorado City Arizona were denied police protection, building permits and water hookups in the towns.

During the hearing yesterday it was revealed by one of the federal government’s key witnesses that officers in Short Creek routinely turned a blind eye towards property crimes. Jeff Barlow, executive director of the trust that owns most of the real estate in Short Creek, said officers work against his group in carrying out evictions on homes and commercial properties.

A key issue at the heart of this week’s hearings will be to determine what steps to take to overhaul the police department.

The trust wants a federal judge to appoint an official who will have the power to hire and fire officers. The U.S. Justice Department has gone a step further by asking the judge to disband the police department while also putting county sheriffs in charge of policing duties.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has come out and said that they would be willing to take over police services for Short Creek, if that’s what the feral government decides to do.
