In a half-empty courtroom Monday in Salt Lake City, former FLDS child bride Elissa Wall testified in her personal injury lawsuit against former cult leader, Warren Jeffs. No one was sitting on the defendant’s side, not even an attorney. Jeffs was unavailable, since he is serving a life sentence in a Texas prison for having relations with two young girls, who happened to be his wives. He has (or had) more than seventy wives in all.

The hearing yesterday in Salt Lake City was aimed at determining what damages Wall should receive from Jeffs and the FLDS (the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). She filed the lawsuit because at the age of 14 she was forced to marry a man. The man she married was also her cousin and a person she had detested since she was a little girl.

On the witness stand yesterday, the plaintiff said these forced marriages are still going on within the FLDS. She is hoping that a lawsuit such as this one, as well as others, will lead to an end of these forced marriages.

Wall’s autobiography, “Stolen Innocence” was a very successful book when it was released nine years ago. She was able to eventually escape the marriage and the FLDS and is happily married today away from Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona, which are more or less home for the FLDS.
