Utah Deer Season Should Be Buck Wild

Utah wildlife officials are predicting a great season for deer hunters this coming fall.

The Division of Wildlife Resources estimates there are now 23 bucks for every 100 does, up from eight per 100 in the 1990s.

Justin Shannon with the Division observes, “More bucks in the population means more bucks of all ages should be available to hunters.”

Fawn numbers are also healthy with 64 fawns per 100 does and even more importantly, a 77 percent survival rate. Statewide, there are more than 355,000 deer. Says Shannon, “We are in a rare window where giving more hunters a chance to hunt and keeping lots of bucks in the herds can happen at the same time.”

Wildlife Resources has completed 1,500 deer habitat restoration projects in the past decade, covering 1.2 million acres.

The deadline for applying for a hunting permit is March 3.
