gap_smallAt the Page City Council meeting last Wednesday, February 26, 2014, the Arizona Department of Transportation made a presentation on the latest news of the repair of US 89 and continued frustration was also expressed by council members over the lack of proper signs showing the shortest route to Page.

It was over a year ago that a landslide buckled a stretch of 89 south of Page and the actual, physical construction has not started yet. ADOT is optimistic about the progress which has been made to prepare for the actual road repair. According to ADOT rep, Steve Ocean, all of the required geological investigations and environmental studies have now been completed and they are currently waiting on the necessary right of ways to proceed. Ground breaking and construction is on track to start by summer of 2014 and completion may be done by the end of the year, barring any complications.

Page City Council member Mike Bryan asked Ocean to look into a better sign at the Bodaway Gap where 89T branches off to Page. There have been many reports of folks traveling to Page missing the turn at the Gap. The current sign in place is a white sheet with orange spray paint spelling out the word Page.

Page Tourism director Lee McMichael says the correct path to Page is still unknown by too many. McMichael is campaigning for ADOT to conduct another Public Relations blitz on the temporary detour while 89 is being repaired. McMichael also says tourism, city officials, and local business owners are coming together to devise a media plan before the season hits, so people south of Page will know there is a faster way to Lake Powell than there was last season.
