Needed for the parks!!!

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area carries the largest backlog of maintenance projects of all national parks located in Utah.

The NRA is $65.1 million short when it comes to addressing needed upkeep; most projects have been postponed for years. Increased visitation and decreases in Congressional funding are behind the problem.

System-wide, the National Park Service shortfall is $11.5 billion, up $200 million over last year. The numbers don’t include operating shortfalls, which all park units face.

Across Utah, maintenance projects are underfunded to the tune of $278 million, including $62 million at Zion and $37.6 million at Bryce. Over 300 million people visited national parks last year, which set a new record.

President Barack Obama is proposing $3 billion in funding for parks next year; 2016 is the centennial anniversary of the founding of the park system.
