Ground is to be broken on Saturday for a solar farm in Kayenta. The project stems from a joint effort between the Salt River Project (SRP) and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA).

A contractor has been hired for this large-scale project, which will be located about five miles north of Kayenta, off Route 163. Navajo leaders and representatives from the utility are expected to be on hand. The public is also invited to the 10 a.m. event.

According to the NTUA the solar farm is expected to produce 27.5 megawatts of photo-voltaic solar energy. It is believed that the solar farm will lead to lower electric rates.

According to Navajo President Russell Begaye, “The Navajo Nation is excited about the impressive future and arrangement that SRP and NTUA have forged and the opportunity that the Navajo people will be given to receive a significant portion of their energy with solar resources.”

Begaye said that this is a new horizon for an awakening of a new dawn.
