Chris DeshaneThe Navajo Times reports Joe Shirley Jr. supporters stormed the Window Rock Sports Center Tuesday night chanting “8 more years” while declaring victory in the Navajo Nation presidential primary election with just a handful of chapters left to report.

According to the Times report, they were defying those who had grumbled that Shirley’s previous two terms, 2004-2011, should have been enough and Shirley should step aside and let a younger person take the helm.

That younger person could be local boy, Chris Deschene, from LeChee and class of ’89 Page High School, who grabbed a good share of the youth vote and trailed Shirley by just 2 percent of voting totals

Meanwhile, of his defeat, current President Ben Shelly said,

The People have spoken….my political career ends here.” – Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly

Shelly came in 7th overall in the playing field with just 2,446 votes.
