A statewide search and rescue training event in southern Utah this weekend turned into an actual search and rescue when a Carbon County man disappeared under water.

The 21-year-old was attempting to swim to an island in the middle of Sand Hollow Reservoir when he went under. His girlfriend cried for help when he didn’t surface.

Almost 100 search and rescue personnel responded, along with three helicopters that were participating in the training.

Washington County Sheriff Deputy Darell Cashin said, “It was like the search and rescue group had been working together for 20 years.”

After providing emergency medical care and performing CPR for more than 45 minutes the man was loaded into the ambulance and transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. As this report was taken and published, the man’s condition has not been released.

The training involved ground operations, dive practices, and mock rescues.
