Safe Halloween Tips for Kids and Pets

October 31

hallow_smallMake it an especially fun and safe Halloween celebration this year with some smart tips for both the kids and pets, too!

The Coconino County Public Health Services District (CCPHSD) Injury Prevention Program and Safe Kids Coconino County urge parents to prepare their children to walk safely, and remind drivers to be particularly alert this Halloween.

Top safety tips for kids:

* Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, wear light colors. Masks can obstruct your vision, so choose non-toxic face paint and make-up whenever possible. Carry glow sticks or flashlights so you can see better, as well as be seen by drivers.

* Cross the street safely at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look both ways before crossing the street and be mindful of your surroundings.

* Put electronic devices down and keep heads up while walking – not running – across the street.

* Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.

* Watch out for cars that are turning or backing up and do not dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars.

Top safety tips for drivers:

* Slow down while driving in residential neighborhoods. Remember that popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

* Be alert and take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

* Reduce any distractions inside your car, such as talking on the phone or eating so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Tips for Pet Owners:

Halloween poses a number of potential safety and health threats to pets, so save the tricks and treats for kids this year and keep your animals safe. The Arizona Humane Society says to try and find a secure room for them and bring in their food and water and a few toys to make them feel secure. Keep the candy away from pets. Also use caution around open flames inside jack-o-lanterns and other smaller decorations that a pet might swallow. A quick photo-op in costume is okay, but don’t leave pets dressed up for an extended period of time. Taking the family pet along for trick or treating is not recommended.
