A good number of vehicles are expected to be northbound on I-15 Saturday morning, as Kanab and Fredonia residents, and others, head toward Salt Lake City for a rally honoring the late LeVoy Finicum. He is the Fredonia rancher who was shot and killed by law enforcement in late January in Oregon, while he was participating in the occupation at a wildlife refuge.

The rally begins at 1 P.M. at the State Capital. Among the speakers scheduled to be on stage is the widow of Finicum, Jeanette, who is expected to speak publicly for the first time since her husband’s death. Their two daughters, Thara and Brittney, are also slated to speak to the gathering.

The 55-year old Finicum was part of the occupation at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. He and several others were on their way to a meeting in another town when they were stopped by law enforcement. In what turned out to be an altercation, Finicum was shot dead when authorities say they thought he was going for a gun.

Finicum would have turned 56 the following day, January 27.

Those planning Saturday’s rally will have a petition for rally-goers to sign asking for an official investigation into Finicum’s killing.
