The Navajo Nation council has begun its most recent council session in Window Rock.

President Russell Begaye provided an update on the Navajo Nation Veterans Advisory Council during his state of the nation address. Eight of the 11 member Veterans Advisory council have been sworn in and, according to President Begaye, the advisory council can begin turning their attention to helping the tribe’s veterans.

The first responsibility of the Veterans Advisory Council is to pursue housing opportunities for veterans, Begaye said,  followed by securing quality health care services.

“On this issue, we should never ever use the word or say the statement, ‘a homeless veteran.’ We are going to eradicate that,” Begaye added.

Begaye also said he would appreciate the delegates wrapping up the session by Thursday.

The reason? On Friday, the U.S Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will have an oversight hearing in Phoenix to examine the EPA’s response to tribes during the Gold King Mine Spill and Begaye would like council to adjourn before then so delegates can attend that hearing.
