Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly and the 23rd Navajo Nation Council praised U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (Ariz. CD-1) for her efforts on behalf of the nation.

Delegate Jonathan Nez (Shonto) thanked Kirkpatrick for “being the people’s voice on Capitol Hill.”

Kirkpatrick, 64, was raised on the White Mountain Apache reservation. That shaped her appreciation and understanding of issues facing tribes today, she said.

“The Navajo Nation is thankful for all that you have done for us,” Shelly said. “We showed our appreciation at the voting polls this past year.”

Kirkpatrick was first elected to Congress in 2008, then was re-elected in 2012 and 2014.

Shelly noted how 27 miles of dirt road on the reservation were paved in just 78 days after part of U.S. Route 89 collapsed. Navajo Route 20 became the detour, linking Bodaway-Gap, Coppermine and LeChee to Page. The remarks came during a special Navajo swearing-in ceremony for Kirkpatrick.
