At Page City Council on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 $20,000 of the Tourism Contingency Fund was made available to the Powell Museum and Visitor’s Center for expansion. At Wednesday’s meeting, parties also accepted a Memorandum of Agreement between the City of Page and the Powell Museum regarding the Visitor Center. City Attorney Joe Estes says the document basically puts ” the unwritten in writing and outlines the expectations of both parties.”

The Weaver's Trail Exhibit at John Wesley Powell MuseumMark Law, President of the Powell Museum Board of Directors, explained the expansion plans include some construction and reconfiguring of some existing museum space to better handle the increase of tourist traffic now that the Museum has added Visitor Center duties. Law gave an example of the traffic increase saying that while the Museum saw 15,000 visitors in 2010, by last year, 2013, that number had increased to 25,000 visitors.

Renovation plans including opening up some current office spaces to create more room for work-stations and extended counter space to better accommodate the expected continued increase in visitors to the facility. He also said he is hopeful the current fix will accommodate the crowds for the next 3 to 5 years. The Museum has also leased two facilities on 10th, giving them another 550 square feet for an office for the Curator and a climate-controlled area for archival use.
