Dine College is working on creating a police academy for the Navajo Nation’s tribal law enforcement.Navajo Police Vehicle

The country’s first tribally controlled college is outlining plans to replace the Navajo Law Enforcement Academy, which closed three years ago. That facility was located in Toyei, Ariz and closed in 2012 because of operational and maintenance issues.

The nation has not had a law enforcement training facility during that time period.

Dine College Board of Regents President Greg Bigman said last week the college will draft a memorandum of understanding with the Navajo Nation on establishing a facility and education services for officers in training.

Supporters of the creation of a training facility say the tribe is in dire need of more officers and a training facility closer to tribal lands.

The Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety says officers who are trained in the nation will be more culturally sensitive to Navajo values.

The Navajo Nation’s Law and Order Committee asked Dine College to put together a report which reviews funding and options for an academy. That report should be completed by the end of July
