8/18 Sports Jam

Last edition in the jam we previewed the girls cross country team at Page High School, now it’s time to give the boys their due.

Like the girls, MaxPreps.com anointed the Sand Devil boys as favorites to capture the division 3 state title after running to a championship last year.  However head coach Macarthur Lane says that the boys must find leadership and production from underclassmen after the team lost 4 of its top 7 runners to graduation in order for a chance at repeating. Coach Lane is looking for Issac Manson to anchor the team this year and become one of the top runners in the state while another of the Sand Devils top runners in Caley Sandoval recovers from an injury.

Moving from the running trail to the gridiron, Coach Jeff Wheatly and the Sand Devils football team traveled to Sedona last Friday for a final tune up before the regular season kicks off this week. Coach Wheatly said the team came away with a lot of positives but still has a lot to work on. Coach Wheatly also stated that this team as opposed to others in the past has room to grow and it should be fun watching the team progress this year. Going into this week of practice he says the defense looks stellar and that they’re running the ball well, but he is looking for the offense to be a little quicker off of the ball.

The Sand Devils begin their season this Friday when the host Tuba City. That is all for this edition of the sports jam, I will see you on Friday. Until then go Sand Devils.
