SandDevilsWinThe Page High School Sand Devils got the 2014 season off to a good start Friday night at home, beating the visiting Warriors of Tuba City 35-14. Highlights from the game include two 70-yard interception returns by senior linebacker, Kordell Chewing.

The festivities prior to the game included a student council sponsored tail gate party at the school’s parking lot. The everyone moved to Cyclone Field for the 7 PM kick-off.

Prior to the game Page head coach, Jeff Wheatley, said his team is excited about the season getting started.

“Yeah, we have a lot of juniors and seniors, and they’re really starting to come together. The leadership is getting better and they’re starting to click. – Page HS head football coach Jeff Wheatley

The coach said it had been fun to watch the team as the weeks of practice went by.

“It’ll be great because they’ll be able to get after someone other than themselves,” said Wheatley referring to the team practicing against themselves during preseason practice.

As a team, the coach said his team is serious and focused.

I think they’re going to have fun and work real hard,” he added. “And at the same time they’re really focused on doing well.”

The Page roster is small for high school football; about 29 or 30 players, which means there won’t be a lot standing around on the bench. Wheatley says despite the small number of players, few will be playing both offense and defense.

“I think they’re well-rested and ready to go; pretty focused.”
After the game against Tuba City, the Page team has a week off because of the Labor Day weekend. At first the coach was apprehensive about the layoff.

“You know, at first I was a little hesitant about it, but I realized that it’s nice because we can get that first game in, and then we’ll have time to shore things up and fix the little mistakes that we have,” said Wheatley. “Because, then those few three weeks are going to be really tough.”

He says they’ll need that extra time to be healthy and re-adjust if they need to.

The Sand Devils next game is Friday September 5 at Payson HS. It will be carried by AM-1340 KPGE.
