The Coconino County Board of Supervisors has selected Page Lake View School Principal, Risha VanderWey, to serve as County Superintendent of Schools.

The Board appointed VanderWey to head the Coconino County Education Service Agency (CCESA) as Superintendent of Schools beginning March 17, 2014 when Robert Kelty steps down. Kelty recently announced his resignation from the office to accept a position with Teach for America.

After vetting multiple highly qualified candidates, the Board of Supervisors is pleased to welcome Risha as our next Superintendent of Schools. Her expertise and background working to provide our students with a sound education will ensure our children are prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow.” – Matt Ryan/Board of Supervisors Chairman

VanderWey has been serving the Page community for several years as Principal of Lake View Elementary. Prior to Lake View, VanderWey was with Desert View School and previously worked in Flagstaff where her husband resides.

VanderWey obtained her superintendent certificate from Northern Arizona University and holds two master’s degrees, including one in educational leadership and the other in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

I thank the Board of Supervisors for the opportunity to serve as our next Superintendent of Schools. Education is more than a passion, it’s a calling and I intend to draw on the skills and expertise I have acquired throughout my career. To become effective leaders of tomorrow, our students must be given the tools and opportunities needed to be successful citizens of the 21st Century.” – Risha VanderWey

VanderWey’s term will run through 2014, until a primary and general election is held to fill the remainder of outgoing Superintendent of Schools Robert Kelty’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2016.
