John C. Page Memorial Park Deaths
PAGE, AZ (May 20, 2021)
The City of Page, Substance Abuse Task Force, along with community and regional partners, have been working diligently to identify solutions and resources to provide assistance to individuals that are displaced and /or suffering from substance abuse and addiction. The City of Page is currently seeking millions of dollars in funding to construct additional treatment and shelter facilities and to implement a substance abuse treatment program that would be administered through the Page Magistrate Court. Sadly, highlighting the need for these continued efforts, three deaths have occurred in John C. Page Memorial Park over the last 10 months.
The first death was a 50-year-old transient man who was found dead on July 20, 2020. The cause of death was combined alcohol and oxycodone intoxication. The second was a 57-year-old man from Tonalea who was found dead on September 15, 2020. The cause of death was choking on food. Alcohol intoxication was also a contributing factor. The third was a 53-year-old man from Kaibeto who was found dead on May 17, 2021. The cause and manner of death are still under investigation by the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, however a preliminary investigation has revealed alcohol intoxication is likely a contributing factor in the death.
The City of Page expresses its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased individuals and seeks input and collaborative partnerships with community and regional partners that may provide resources and solutions to address the complex underlying causes of displacement and substance abuse.
