Page Girls Now 28-1

002On Tuesday night at Page High School, the girls and boys basketball teams were up against the Wildcats of Chinle High School. The Lady Sand Devils won another one, 62-32, and improved their season record to 28-1. The boys played a good close ballgame, but ended up on the losing end, 58-53.

It was Senior Night at the school, and senior athletes and cheerleaders were honored before each game.

But the girls were led in scoring by a freshman! It was Lisa Watson who led the scoring for Page with 15-points on the night. Senior Ember Sloan added a dozen points and was instrumental on defense, along with Ashley Dempsey, as they always are.

The boys had a rough go of it in a game where they held the lead the first 30 1/2 minutes of the contest. But with 1:34 remaining, the Sand Devil guys saw their lead go away and never come back.

Penalty shots by the Wildcats can be blamed with seeing the lead slip away. In the 4th quarter there were numerous Page fouls and the Chinle players responded by going 15 of 18 at the charity line. It hurt!

Also hurting the cause was a late-game technical foul called on the Sand Devils when one of the Chinle players took a shot to the face and hit the floor at a time when the ball was loose. Both technical foul shots were good.

The loss probably will keep the 10-18 Page guys out of post season activity. Prior to the game Head Coach Russ Skubal was really hopeful for a win over Chinle, feeling that it would carry his boys past the regular season.

The girls, of course, will keep going after Friday’s season finale at Hopi High School. The guys will be there, too, wrapping up their first season with Coach Skubal.Friday’s games will be carried by KPGE in Page 1340-AM.
