Official Signs to Page Finally Up at The Gap

March 20
21:44 2014

The hand-painted sheet with “Page” hanging at the Gap is down and an official sign to Page is up, pointing travelers in the right direction on US 89T.

The Gap Turnoff to PageAfter the suggestion was made at a Page City Council meeting earlier this month, the Arizona Department of Transportation added three more signs at key junctions. In addition to the new sign on Highway 89 near the Gap, two new signs have been put up in Page. One sign is near the intersection of US 89 and US 98, and the other where Coppermine Road turns into 89T.

ADOT has continually reviewed and modified its signage along US 89, US 89T and US 160 and SR 98 since the February 20, 2013 landslide. In total, ADOT has installed and removed more than 200 signs since the US 89 closure.”–Dustin Krugel, ADOT Statewide Public Information Officer

The ADOT Sign Shop has been kept busy after the landslide forced US 89 to be closed near Bitter Springs. New signs were needed to let drivers know where to go on detour routes. For some reason, a sign at the critical junction with US 89T at The Gap was left out. Some drivers unfamiliar with the area ended up taking the lengthy “scenic route” through Marble Canyon, Jacob Lake, Fredonia and Kanab to get to Page.

The recently paved, 44-mile long US 89T route runs parallel to US 89 from The Gap to LeChee. US 89T is the former Navajo Route 20. It was paved last summer as a short-term solution to the closure of US 89. Reconstruction of the damaged portion of US 89 is not expected to start until this summer. Taking US 89T is actually a few miles shorter than the original US 89 route.
