The National Park Service is considering limiting visitor numbers to relieve overwhelmed facilities and resources at Zion National Park.

“We haven’t found the perfect answer. It’s going to take a lot of little things,” said NPS spokeswoman Aly Baltrus. Limiting the number of hikers and campers is one of several strategies being considered.

A reservation system would replace the existing first-come, first-served system at campgrounds.

The record of 3.7 million visitors to the park in 2015 is expected to be surpassed with four million this year, Baltrus says daily park operations are strained, and cultural resources are threatened.

A public comment period on the problems is running through November 23rd.
