Northern Arizona Fire Danger on the Rise

March 25
23:49 2014

Warm, dry weather in northern Arizona has been great for playing outside, but fire danger in the forest is on the rise. As a result, fire managers have moved several areas in the Kaibab National Forest, Coconino National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park into the “High” fire danger range.

Fire Danger“High” fire danger means wildfires can start easily. Small fuels, like grasses and needles, catch on fire fast. Unattended campfires and brush fires are likely to get out of control and spread quickly.

Other areas remain in the “Low” or “Moderate” fire danger ranges thanks to enough moisture in the localized area.

Following is the latest fire danger breakdown by area:

Mogollon Rim Ranger District: Moderate
Flagstaff Ranger District: Moderate
Red Rock Ranger District: High

North Kaibab Ranger District: Low
Tusayan Ranger District: High
Williams Ranger District: High

South Rim: High
North Rim: Low

No restrictions or closures are in effect yet, but visitors are asked to use caution with campfires, cigarettes and other ignition sources. Be aware of red flag warnings or other fire weather conditions. Information is available here.

Communities can reduce the risk of wildfire damage by becoming knowledgeable about ways to protect their homes and neighborhoods. More information is available at here. Information on being prepared for evacuation in case of fire can be found here.
