New Wind Farm

New Wind Farm

Concrete is being poured this week for the tower foundations of a controversial new wind farm in San Juan County.

When completed, the 27 massive turbines will send 61 megawatts of electricity into the grid.  The 308-foot towers will feature blades 187 feet long.

But Latigo Wind Park is being challenged by a local grassroots group.  The Northern Monticello Alliance says the project will destroy property values by being a landscape eyesore, and it claims the land use permit issued by the county has expired.

Sustainable Power Group, which is building the farm and will operate it, points to what it calls “mitigating landscaping,” such as trees serving as windbreaks.

The project expects to pay $10 to $15 million in taxes to the county over the next 20 years.  About 100 construction jobs will be generated.
