A new, simplified number has been implemented for the national suicide hotline.

The former 10-digit number has been replaced with 988.

Callers are connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

In Utah, suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 10 to 24 years and second for those 25 to 44 years old.  The state ranks sixth-highest in the nation for its suicide rate.

The hotline’s messages are tailored to specific age groups.

The old number logged over two million callers each year.

People with concerns about someone else’s risk for suicide are encouraged to call.

Suicide attempt survivors are often seriously injured and are likely to suffer from depression.
