July 15
16:00 2017

The man that several law enforcement agencies have been hunting ever since the he took shots at Forest Service employees on the 4th of July, has been found, shot and killed.

The name of the suspect has not been released yet; not until his family is notified, at which time the media will be notified.

The shooting death was confirmed Saturday by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal shooting occurred at a site called Timber Camp, which is about twenty or twenty-five miles northeast of Globe, Arizona, in Gila County.

The original incident occurred in Coconino County at Canyon Point Campground. No one was hit at that time. The suspect was also suspected of starting numerous brush fires, none of which grew to significance.

Apparently early Saturday morning (July 15) officers with the US Forest Service and the San Carlos Apache Tribal Police came across the suspect at Timber Camp.

Gunfire ensued between law enforcement and the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.

(Previous update) Tuesday afternoon Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies and Forest Lake  Fire District officials were combing the area around Canyon Point Campground for a man who had apparently shot a firearm. The entire campground area was evacuated. A new poster of the wanted man was released Friday afternoon by the sheriff’s office.

According to reports, when authorities were trying to make contact with a suspicious individual, he fired a shot at them. This happened late in the morning, and at last report (late in the afternoon) the suspect had not been found. No one was hit.

The man in question is believed to be armed with multiple firearms. Investigators also believe the person is familiar with the area.

Canyon Point Campground is in extreme southeastern Coconino County.

The search for the suspect was scaled back on Thursday, when authorities felt he must know the area very well, and is either in hiding or had escaped the area.

Among other the things, the suspect is accused of setting numerous fires, perhaps as many as eight of them. They believe he may have been living in the woods for an extended period of time before the shooting took place on the 4th of July. The shootings involved a shotgun and a handgun.

The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information or have had sightings of the suspect to call the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office at 1-800-338-7888 or Coconino County Silent Witness at 928-774-6111.
