New National Monument in Southern Utah?

The gathering of several top officials from Washington D.C, who quietly attended a “Gathering of the Tribes” put on last weekend by Native American tribes in southeastern Utah, set off speculation that a new national monument surrounding the Bears Ears in San Juan county could be created.

The presence of the officials was only made known to a certain few, who were said to be sworn to secrecy. The attendance of the federal officials is the clearest signal to date that the Obama administration may be considering the creation of a huge national monument to protect the Bears Ears, a place riddled with countless archaeological treasures and gorgeous red rock scenery.

Previously, a 1.9 million acre proposal was rejected by the San Juan County Public Lands Council, however, the council did endorse a significantly smaller proposal.
