Jim R. Parris – a member of the Osage and Cherokee Nations – has been confirmed as controller for the Navajo Nation.

The 23rd Navajo Nation Council approved Parris, who was first named to the post by President Russell Begaye on November 30. Parris replaces longtime controller Mark Grant.

Parris has more than 35 years experience in accounting, management and auditing in tribal, federal and private sectors.

He hit the ground running.

“I’ll be doing a workload analysis,” Parris said.

By working with the Office of Management and Budget, Parris hopes to improve contract monitoring. He also believes his office can work more efficiently with other programs and assist them in using their budgets to greater effect.

There is also an opportunity to increase revenues for the Navajo Nation by revising the investment portfolio, according to Parris.

Parris’ expertise is “vital in overseeing and protecting the Navajo Nation’s finances,” Begaye said.

Parris plans to evaluate and assess each of the tribe’s investment managers. He will then decide if any changes should be made.
