Navajo Nation Council Approves Largest Spending Package in History

The largest spending package in the history of the Navajo Nation has been passed by the Navajo Nation Council.

The bill, which was approved unanimously, will allocate close to $180 million to fund water and sanitation projects throughout the Navajo Nation.

According to Council, numerous Navajo communities suffer from poor water quality, and Council hopes the bill will improve that aspect by eliminating water contamination.

The funds are being allocated from a $554 million settlement that claimed the federal government did not properly manage Navajo Nation resources for close to 50 years.

According to Navajo Nation law, the money can only be used for economic and community development, educational purposes and infrastructure.

The bill now goes to Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye for consideration.

Begaye will have one week to consider the bill.
