Navajo Leaders Get Their Day

Navajo Leaders Get Their Day

The third Friday of March will now be set aside to honor the leadership of the Navajo Nation. A bill creating the Navajo Nation Naat’aanii Day was passed by the Nation’s Council Thursday by a vote of 14-6.

Originally, it was hoped that a day would be set aside in March to honor former Presidents and Chairmen of the Navajo Nation. The Nation had “Chairmen” prior to having Presidents. But as the weeks passed, the holiday was expanded to honor all leaders.

“Naat’aanii” means someone who holds a leadership position, including elected officials, school board members and chapter officials. The new holiday will not be a paid tribal holiday.

Changes were made recently to the bill when tribe officials were at Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort in Flagstaff. There was no discussion prior to Thursday’s vote.
