Navajo Court Orders Presidential Election NEXT!
March 23

Speaker Lorenzo Bates

The Navajo Supreme Court issued an order Friday that without any more delays the election for the nation’s president will be held April 21st. Under the Supreme Court’s edict, the election on the 21st of next month will have Joe Shirley Jr. and Russell Begaye on the ballot; no one else.

It means the proposed referendum on fluency is being shelved by the high court.

Also on Friday, the court ordered that the 317-thousand dollars needed to conduct the election should be transferred right away to election officials in order to conduct the April 21st election.

Many on the Navajo Nation looked toward Council Speaker Lorenzo Bates for a comment on the Supreme Court’s ruling, but Mr. Bates is withholding comment at this time in respect for Navajo law enforcement officer Alex Yazzie, who was shot and killed while in the line of duty on Friday.

On the Friday prior to the court’s ruling, the Nation’s Council had ordered that prior to the presidential election, that a referendum would be held in order for the people of the Navajo Nation to decide once and for all if their leader should be fluent in the native language.

The ruling Friday was in response to a motion filed earlier in the week by failed presidential candidates Hank Whitethorne and Dale Tsosie.

This week there is likely to be much more said about Friday’s Supreme Court ruling.
