If you love the great outdoors, stop by one of the five open houses the National Park Service (NPS) is hosting in February to give feedback on off-road vehicles, quagga mussel control, the Rainbow Bridge Trail, and more.

The NPS will be showcasing and soliciting feedback on current planning issues, including the proposed Off-Road Vehicle Management Plan for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the future of Lake Powell invasive mussel prevention program.

February 11 in Page

Tuesday, February 11, is the date for the Page Open House. It’s from 4pm to 7pm at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Headquarters, 691 Scenic View Drive in Page, Arizona. Other open houses scheduled throughout the month take place in Kanab, Salt Lake City, Escalante and Blanding, Utah.

February 6 in Kanab

Kanab’s open house is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Kanab Middle School, 690 S. Cowboy Way, Kanab, Utah.

This is a great opportunity to take part in the management of your public lands. I welcome and encourage everyone to participate in these meetings. We are in the process of making decisions that will have long-term effects on park resources and visitors’ experiences. The public’s participation will show us where there are concerns and will help us make informed decisions on the best alternatives.” – Superintendent Todd Brindle.

In addition to Off-road Vehicle Management and Mussel Management, subjects include the Rainbow Bridge Trail Improvement Environmental Assessment and the Livestock Grazing Management Plan.

Off Road Vehicle Management Plan

The plan analyzes actions for managing off-road use of motor vehicles and on-road use of off-highway vehicles and street-legal all-terrain vehicles. It assesses the environmental impacts that could result. The NPS preferred alternative includes opportunities for motorized recreation on park roads and designated ORV routes while prohibiting use where resources may be at risk. An electronic copy of the Plan/Draft Environmental Impact Statement is available here.

Quagga-Zebra Mussel Management Plan

As of January 2014, over 1,300 adult quagga mussels have been removed from Lake Powell. More are being found as the season progresses. The Quagga-Zebra Mussel Management Plan will help the NPS decide what to do to manage invasive mussels in Glen Canyon. The plan will consider changes to existing efforts and analyze control, containment, and other park management actions. Funding options will also be considered. Rainbow Bridge Trail Improvement Environmental Assessment

Last year, a flood washed out a key trail section from the dock on Lake Powell to Rainbow Bridge. A temporary trail has restored access, but additional work is needed to provide a more long-term solution. The NPS is also considering extending the trail. Redesigning and rebuilding the Rainbow Bridge trail is also needed to accommodate fluctuating lake elevations and associated trail damage. For more information or to provide comments, click here.

Livestock Grazing Monument Management Plan

The Bureau of Land Management plans to amend the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Management Plan to provide direction for livestock grazing. The planning area consists of about 2.1 million acres of land. The plan administers livestock grazing on lands managed by the National Park Service within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
