One lane of US 89A has reopened between Jacob Lake and Marble Canyon. Traffic will alternate using the open lane to travel through the area.  The previously closed road section stretched from milemarker 531 to 555.  Use caution when driving through the area.

Heavy rains caused the loose dirt to slide off the mountain, taking the boulders with it.

Road crews could be seen attempting to remove the debris with bulldozers.

Some of the boulders blocking the roadway were as big as cars.

The closure is in place from five miles west of Marble Canyon to Jacob Lake.

The road is still closed at this time with no indication as to when it might be reopened.

Lake Powell Communications spoke with Dustin Krugel, the Public Information Officer for the Arizona Department of Transportation about the closure.

“Crews have been working around the clock to clear the road, said Krugel.”

Those wishing to reach their destination through 89A will need to detour via US 89 and over the slope by Bitter Springs.

The storm that caused the mudslide brought 70 mph winds and early reports indicated a possible tornado, but were later believed to have been just a computer glitch in the Doppler radar weather system.

Monsoon season has washed away numerous different roads in our area this year, including Lakeshore Drive and the Glen Canyon Dam Visitor Center parking lot.
