Even thought Navajo President Ben Shelly has signed legislation to move the 2014 Presidential election to this August, with a new primary in June, it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen that way. That’s because there are those within the Nation who are fighting it.

The two men who challenged the candidacy of Chris Deschene last year, and actually, through the courts, got him off the Presidential ballot, are now fighting the new election schedule.

Attorneys for Dale Tsosie and Hank Whitethorne filed a motion earlier this week challenging the Presidential election schedule approved by the Navajo Nation Council and then signed by Shelly. They would like to see a January election held between Joe Shirley Jr. and Russell Begaye, saying the legislature should be held in contempt of the Supreme court for not doing so.

President Shelly was sworn-in again this week as the Navajo President until January 26th. It is unclear what will happen after that except indications are that Shelly will stay in office until the August election, if it happens.
Shelly is not running again, apparently because of his seventh place showing in the primary last summer. The man who finished second, Mr. Deschene, is still very much being talked about.

It remains to be seen what his intentions are concerning the proposed August election.
