More than 180 years ago tribes in Georgia were forced out of the state, to walk the infamous Trail of Tears. But now, “Little Cheyenne Girl” has come to Atlanta.

The painting is a new symbol for the efforts to improve Native American health through affordable insurance.healthSM

“Little Cheyenne Girl” will be digitally projected onto the Georgia World Congress Center until September 15.

The painting was created by J. Nicole Nahami-A-Piah, a member of an Oklahoma tribe. She was originally self-taught, then later studied at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe.

“Little Native Girl” was selected after a national call for entries. It is painted in blues, greens, reds and oranges on a blackened canvas.

The vivid and contrasting colors shape an image meant to resonate with urban Native populations.

Among Native Americans, 28% report poor health, compared to just 16% of the overall U.S. population. About 30% are uninsured.

In the Atlanta area there are 45,000 Native American or Alaskan Natives – and 29% have no insurance.
