LDS Church Fights Abuse Subpoena

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is asking a federal court to quash a subpoena summoning President Thomas Monson to testify about the alleged sexual abuse of four Navajo youth decades ago.

In its motion, the church argues that Monson has no special knowledge about the church-sponsored Indian Student Placement Program, which began in 1947 and ran through the mid-1990s. The program placed thousands of Navajo children in LDS foster homes in Utah, Idaho, and New Mexico for the purpose of assimilation into Anglo culture, a practice now frowned upon.

Attorneys for the Navajos counter that Monson possess unique information because he has been a church apostle since 1963.

The Navajo plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed in tribal court claim they were sexually abused while in foster homes. They are seeking unspecified damages.
