Lake Powell Re-opening

According to Page Mayor Bill Diak, Lake Powell is opening! The lake main access points will begin opening today with the official re-opening on Saturday, October 12, 2013.

Stateline will probably remain closed, but Wahweap, Antelope Point, Halls Crossing, and Bullfrog are all scheduled to begin opening. Utah is opening the lake and other National Parks in their system. As of right now, the Grand Canyon and other parks are still closed in Arizona. Lee’s Ferry will be open upstream to the dam, but remains closed from Lee’s Ferry downstream for river launches.

Denise Shultz, with the National Parks Service, also reported to our KXAZ News Director that the marinas are officially opening as well as Rainbow Bridge.  The Grand Canyon remains closed.

It’s been a tough year for Page, the hub of the Grand Circle located at the Glen Canyon Recreational Area of Northern Arizona. Last February, U.S. 89, the main artery linking Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon to Lake Powell was cut off last February, 2013, when a 150-foot portion of pavement collapsed. This was a big blow to a town that gets over 3.5 million visitors a year. Bus loads of tourists that usually stopped in Page along U.S. 89 were now forced to take a round-about detour.

The news was brighter when Arizona Department of Transportation worked with the Navajo Nation to pave a new roadway, N20, which ran parallel to 89. The dedication of this new route which was renamed US 89T on August 29, 2013 was a welcomed relief to this isolated, yet well-traveled area. This roadway opened despite nighttime and speed restrictions in order to provide a direct route between Flagstaff and Page.

The Government Shutdown of October 1, 2013, was yet another blow to the area dependent on National Park visitors for jobs and revenue for local residents in the Page area. Many who had planned their vacations on Lake Powell had to cancel and Colorado River rafters were held back from their dream trips through the Grand Canyon, which remains closed. The opening of Lake Powell is good news for this area which enjoys beautiful October weather and a continued tourist industry.
