Lake Powell Ferry Delayed

Kevin Kitchen with the Utah Division of Transportation confirms the Lake Powell Ferry will make a delayed appearance this year due to a March mishap.  Kitchen says repairs are underway after the ferry ran into a canyon wall due to strong winds and an inexperienced crew when it was making a test run.

ferryclosed_smallThe uplake ferry makes the crossing between the Bullfrog and Halls Crossing marinas and is now set to open about six weeks behind schedule. The ferry links northern and southern portions of State Route 276 in Garfield, Kane and San Juan counties.

Space on the ferry is first come, first served with no reservation system.  The crossing takes approximately 25 minutes to cover the 3.1 mile distance.

Vehicle capacity is 22 cars or any combination of cars, trucks, buses or other equipment that can fit on the deck. Maximum passenger capacity is 150.  Ferry rates range from $10 for foot passengers and $5.00 for bicycles to vehicle fares which start at $25.

Kitchen estimated damages to the ferry at about $150,000 and said the opening will also be contingent upon a coast guard inspection when the repairs are complete. He said officials are hoping for an opening date of July 1, 2014. Once operational, the ferry will run through the Labor Day holiday – barring any more meetings with canyon walls, of course.
