It’s definitely time to be thinking about being prepared for the long holiday weekend and keeping it safe for the 4th! If you are traveling, remember to give yourself plenty of time, expect delays, and don’t be in too great of a hurry to reach your destination, instead, make safely reaching your destination the priority.

Virgin RiverAlthough the Arizona Department of Transportation recently reported that alcohol-related fatalities dropped by more than 7 percent last year, 262 people still were killed in alcohol-related crashes statewide.

Increased holiday traffic combined with alcohol consumption makes the Fourth of July holiday period a dangerous time to be on the road. More than 29,000 DUI arrests were made in Arizona in 2013, according to the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Travel on Interstate 15

ADOT says Interstate 15 is going to be a busy one and they are lifting some of their restrictions through the Virgin River Gorge prior to the Independence Day holiday weekend, but still advising motorists to expect additional traffic through the weekend and be aware of the existing work zones.

With limited alternate routes available due to the remote location of the I-15 Virgin River Gorge corridor, ADOT is urging drivers traveling between Mesquite, Nevada, and St. George, Utah, to plan ahead for possible delays in both directions through the work zones due to heavier traffic volume throughout the holiday weekend.
