Janet Brown – owner of Lake Powell Communications – has been creating stained glass since 1978.

As a young stay-at-home mother of two daughters Brown felt she needed more to her life than making dinner and changing diapers. She was living in Pine Junction, Colorado, then and so began her stained glass business.

She soon found that stained glass was much more popular than stained diapers.

Brown and her late husband, Dan, had run a successful radio station in Gunnison, Colorado, before moving to Page and taking over KPGE-AM and KXAZ-FM in 1990. Dan Brown was also a former mayor of Page.

Janet Brown has had a colorful life, and it began when she was a young girl.

Brown has always loved colors. As a child she lined her windowsill with bottles of water, which she added food coloring to so she could marvel at the various colors.

Her artistry took off in new directions when she learned to fire glass in a kiln.

Today, many of Brown’s projects have both depth and dimension because of her ability to layer glass before firing.

The show at the Powell Museum is called “Desert Bloom,” a vibrant display of colorful flowers.

Also, Brown has a collection of dichroic stained glass earrings for sale – just in case there happens to be any gift-giving holidays looming in the near future. Dichroic is from the Greek word dichro, meaning “of two colors.”

The John Wesley Powell Museum welcomes folks to stop by and share the new and fresh stained glass creations by one of Page’s best known artists. img_2046

There will be an artists reception Friday, November 11th, from 5-7 p.m. at the museum.
