A diabetes clinic in Kykotsmovi is designed to educate and motivate people to make healthy choices in their lives.

The expo, sponsored by the Hopi Special Diabetes Program, will be held on November 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Hopi Veteran’s Memorial Center.

Participants will learn about healthy eating, active living and overall wellness in dealing with Type 2 diabetes in the Hopi/Tewa communities.

Diabetes Prevention educator Valerie Nuvayestewa urged community members to attend the expo and take advantage of the information being offered.

“For some it will mean looking at ways to improve their families and feeling better about making those changes,” Nuvayestewa said.

The expo will include health screenings, foot checks, AIC tests, blood pressure checks and cooking demos.

Blood sugar checks will also be done, with no need to fast beforehand.

Nuvayestewa’s nephew – a high school freshman – is already dealing with diabetes and taking insulin shots. That’s when the importance of the message really hit home for her.

“We need more awareness and we need not being accepting of our kids being this big,” she said.

The expo is free and open to the public.

Between 30% and 35% of all Native Americans are living with diabetes, according to National Relief Charities. In Arizona, more than one in every four natives has the disease.

Though American Indians make up a small percentage of the overall population, they are disproportionately more likely to suffer from diabetes.
