The National Park Service at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has awarded the University of Colorado a $100,000 grant to document the religious and cultural significance of the Hole in the Rock area to members of the Latter-Day Saints church.

The main thrust of the research will be interviewing descendants of the members of the 19th-century San Juan Expedition.

The expedition, comprised of 250 people, made its way through a narrow crevice–since named Hole in the Rock–enroute to establishing the community of Bluff.

Church president Brigham Young dispatched several similar missions to southern Utah for the purpose of settlement.

Used for centuries by American Indians, Hole in the Rock became an important trade route for colonists.
