This fall Greyhills Academy High School students will find 31 dual classes, where they can earn college credits, according to Principal Loren Hudson.

GAHS has partnered with several educational institutions, including Coconino Community College, Northern Arizona University, Dine College, Navajo Technical University, the University of Arizona and Northland Pioneer College, to offer high school students a chance to earn some college credits.

“Based on our partnerships, we build confidence with them,” Hudson explained.

Three institutions, CCC among them, offered several classes last semester, including botany, Navajo language, business management and pre-calculus.

Hudson did similar work during his time with the Flagstaff Unified School District. But GAHS students will get a better offer than their FUSD counterparts did.

“The Flagstaff students had to pay “tuition” for the dual courses; but they will be offered free to Greyhills students,” Hudson said.

Hudson estimated that GAHS students have the opportunity to get a $50,000 education for free.

That benefit comes partly from the partnerships between the institutions and partly because of a reimbursement program created for the Navajo Nation.

“Knowing that, it’s really easy to take advantage of it,” Hudson said.

People oftentimes overlook opportunities right in their own backyards. He points to Dine College as an example.

“Why aren’t we using Dine College? (It’s) right down the road,” Hudson said.

Hudson would love to see Greyhills students take advantage of the dual credit classes and someday graduate from one of GAHS’s educational partners.
