The photo of Grandmother Beach was unveiled Thursday, October 13th at Tse Yaato High School before a crowd of family and friends of Patilena Aguero.patilena-aguero

The photo Aguero took of her 87 year-old great grandmother, Anna Beach of Inscription House, will be on display in the school lobby above the phrase “Do your best in school, my children.” The photo is an expression of the concern and confidence that a grandmother feels for her grandchildren to all the students who come in to Tse Yaato High School.

Aguero gave a short presentation about her photo and her beloved great-grandmother before the photo was unveiled. The photographer explained that she has a strong connection to her great –grandmother, admires Beach’s endurance of hardships, and is proud that her great-grandmother still tends livestock and weaves. Unfortunately, Beach wasn’t able to attend because she was babysitting some of her great-grandchildren.

Aguero had her two year-old daughter, Kadence, dressed in a traditional Navajo dress with her at the unveiling event. Aguero plans to continue working on her photographic skills and particularly enjoys photographing her daughter smiling.

Principal Traci Parker made the introductions at the event and recognized several people for their contributions. Shelly Wayne, a professional photographer and school employee, was Aguero’s photography teacher this quarter and helped sharpen the composition and camera setting skills required for a photo of this quality.

The photo’s phrase, “Do your best in school, my children’ was translated into Navajo by Jerry Williams and Albert Tso, math teacher at Tse Yaato High School. The photo can be viewed in the lobby of Tse Yaato High School at 583 South Lake Powell Boulevard.
