FootraceGrand to Grand Ultra Footrace covers 170 miles in six stages over seven days across Arizona and Utah.  The world class course begins at the North Rim of Grand Canyon and ends on the summit of the Grand Staircase.  Runners and hikers from a variety of countries complete each of the six stages.  The time for each stage is combined to make each runner’s total race time.  The winning time for the September 2014 race was Michele Gaglia of Italy with a time of thirty-one hours, twenty-five minutes and 3 seconds.  Participants can be eliminated from the race if their time on any stage exceeds a preset cutoff time.

The participants camp each evening near the finish line for that stage and the start of the next day’s stage.  Each is responsible for their own backpack of prescribed camping equipment for the week, including food, sleeping bag, mat.  The route for the race takes the participants through some of the most remote areas of the United States where they are subject to harsh but beautiful terrain and a variety of weather conditions that can change quickly.  Endurance is key to success in this race.

Registration is now open for the 2015 Grand to Grand Ultra Footrace at their website  There are nationality quotas so only a limited number of people from each country are allowed.  This creates an amazing group of competitors to further enhance the experience of running through some of the most beautiful country on the planet.  Feel like taking a run through the desert?  Try this race on for size.
