Through funding from District 5, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors recently approved $5,000 for the non-profit Grand Canyon Youth (GCY). The funding helps pre-teen and teenagers from District 5  participate in river education programs this summer.

Providing support for such programs help our youth remain connected with our natural wonders and environmental issues that impact us all. Organizations such as Grand Canyon Youth help to show our youth how important the Canyon and Colorado River is to our communities, the County and way of life.”–District 5 Supervisor Lena Fowler

The multi-day river education programs are offered in partnership with Grand Canyon National Park and the U.S. Geological Survey.

GCY programs offer youth an opportunity to network and build relationships with others from across the country. They teach young people how to become stewards of Grand Canyon National Park and introduce them to careers in outdoor recreation, environmental education, environmental advocacy, science, art and resource management.

Youth throughout District 5 will benefit from the funds recently approved by the County. This includes the communities of Page, Greenehaven, Fredonia, Tuba City, Bodaway, Coppermine, LeChee, Kaibeto, Inscription House, Navajo Mountain, Marble Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs, Jacob Lake and Cliff Dweller.

This funding allows our organization to share the educational power of the Colorado River with youth from across Arizona. We’re thrilled to be able to make this experience available for youth with Grand Canyon in their backyards.”–GCY Executive Director Emma Wharton

GCY is a Flagstaff-based non-profit organization. Their purpose is to inspire curiosity among young people from diverse backgrounds about the natural world, themselves and their communities.

GCY is currently accepting applications for its summer open enrollment programs. Interest forms can be submitted their website.  Space is limited, but all interested youth are encouraged to apply. For additional information on Grand Canyon Youth, call 928-773-7921 or e-mail [email protected]
