Governor Requests State Opening of Grand Canyon

October 08
15:31 2013

jan_brewer_smallOn Friday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and other legislative leaders sent a letter to the President requesting the State of Arizona be allowed to reopen the Grand Canyon using state and private funding. The letter states,

We write to request your leadership to immediately fund America’s National Parks or, at the very least, make it possible for state and private funding to reopen National Parks, which has been done during previous shutdowns and budget shortfalls.”

The letter President Obama also stated that according to a recent National Park Service study, Grand Canyon National Park, in 2011 alone, generated more than $467 million and supported nearly 7,400 jobs.

In 1995, a combination of state and private dollars was used to reopen Grand Canyon National Park after that government shut down. In March of this year, the National Park Service also granted Cape Cod National Seashore the authority to accept private dollars to avoid closure during the sequester.
