Page, Arizona – Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is currently recruiting volunteers for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count on Monday, January 4, 2016. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until approximately 4:00 p.m. During this annual citizen-science event new birders will be paired with more experienced individuals, making this a great way to learn about the birds of the area. Volunteers will meet at park headquarters in Page, Arizona located at 691 Scenic View Drive (off of Highway 89), to sign in and request their location assignments.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to survey birds in a variety of land- and water-based locations including on Lake Powell and the Colorado River below the dam. Birdwatchers should be prepared for exposure to winter weather conditions during this outdoor event. Please bring warm clothing, lunch, water, and birding equipment such as binoculars and a bird guide book if possible.

Local participation in this annual event is only possible with generous support from community volunteers, and local partners. Colorado River Discovery provides transportation on the river below the dam so that important data can be collected on the many avian species that migrate along the Colorado River corridor. Additionally, the Glen Canyon Natural History Association will provide free commemorative t-shirts and a complimentary copy of Peterson’s Guide to Butterflies and Moths to each participant.

Holiday traditions abound this time of year, and the long-standing tradition of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count has supported science for 116 years. Participants offer significant contributions to science and bird conservation during this global count.
