Four Killed on I-40

A two vehicle crash on Interstate-40 east of Flagstaff last week claimed four lives. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) the crash occurred in the westbound lanes of I-10 about 20-miles east of the city of Flagstaff at milepost 221.1 on Thursday August 7, 2014.

I-40According to DPS, an eastbound Honda sedan drove across the median for unknown reasons and struck an westbound vehicle, also a Honda sedan, head-on in the westbound lanes.

In the eastbound Honda was a family from Canoga Park, California. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as 23-year old Michelle Bernadet Yeager, 66-year old Bruce William Yeager and 68-year old Elna G. Yeager.

In the westbound car were residents of Winslow, including 3-year old Kyler Lee Jensen, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also in the westbound Honda were the driver, 45-year old Orlinda Kinlecheenie, and passenger, 21-year old Kelafer Kinlecheenie, who were both transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment. An 11-month old, also in the westbound car, was not injured.

DPS reports that all seven occupants were properly restrained in their respective vehicles. I-40 westbound was closed for close to three hours following the crash.

The investigation into the cause of the mid-morning accident is continuing.

Fatal Wrong Way Crash on I-40 Kills Driver

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is also investigating another fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 40. This one-vehicle crash happened in the early morning hours on Friday (8/15) and left a 39-year old Black Canyon City (Az.) resident dead. According to DPS, the driver’s Chevrolet SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when he exited the “on” ramp at Mountain Rd (Exit 190J) near west of Flagstaff and struck a concrete barrier wall. The driver, identified as Eric Samual Beckwerth, was pronounced dead at the scene. The DPS report says impairment may have been involved.
