The state of Utah has awarded Hildale $670,000 in flood prevention funds.

Thirteen women and children died last September when they were swept away in the raging waters of a flash flood that roared through the community. Several hundred homes in the twin towns of Hildale and Colorado City are located in a flood plain.

The money will be used to site three ponds to collect rain runoff.

Another million dollars, awarded by the federal government will be used for a fourth pond.

Last October, $1.5 million in emergency funds were used to build a 100-foot bridge across a wash and to install culverts.
